CANCER DANGER: Henrico, Richmond, Sandston, Montrose, Highland Springs, Varina

CANCER DANGER: Henrico, Richmond, Sandston, Montrose, Highland Springs, Varina

109,871 Virginia Residents in Toxic Cancer Zone

An industrial plant operated by Sterilization Services of Virginia has been releasing cancer-causing toxic emissions into communities south east of Richmond for decades, putting tens of thousands of nearby residents, workers, and students at serious risk.

The facility is located at 5674 Eastport Blvd, Henrico, VA.

This Henrico facility has been fined by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for releasing toxic pollutants far above legal limits. In a single day, it emitted 600 lbs of toxins, 50% more than what's allowed for an entire year.

Exposure has been linked to serious health conditions, including many cancers and even death.

Toxic Polluting

This facility uses ethylene oxide (EtO), a known human carcinogen, in its sterilization process. As a result, toxic EtO emissions are released into the air.

The facility was named by the EPA as a serious EtO polluter, endangering the communities of Henrico, Richmond, Montrose, Sandston, Highland Springs, Varina and others.

Sterilization Services of Virginia has operated this Henrico county plant since 1990.

Ethylene Oxide: Odorless, Colorless, Toxic

Ethylene Oxide:

Odorless, Colorless, Toxic

Ethylene oxide is used to make various industrial chemicals, such as ethylene glycol, and is also used in some cases to sterilize equipment and other goods.

EtO is an odorless and colorless gas, so residents have no idea it is surrounding their home or place of work. It poses severe health hazards, and chronic exposure can lead to serious health issues. The EPA classified ethylene oxide as a human carcinogen.

Cancers associated with EtO:

  • Breast
  • Leukemia
  • Lymphoma
  • Myeloma/Multiple Myeloma
  • Pediatric
